Mount Morris Elementary was excited to welcome back the Merry-Go-Round Youth Theatre for the second time this school year! The Merry-Go-Round Youth Theatre is the largest touring, curriculum-based theatre in Upstate New York. When a construction team sent to build a hydroelectric dam threatens to destroy the forest and the lives of those within, Emilia and her friends must join forces to stop them before all is lost. In this program our fifth-grade students learned how an American, a Brazilian, and all of Earth’s creatures and natural resources are connected-and why preserving the rainforest is more important now than ever!

Did you know Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire? In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country. Today, at MMCSD members of the Mount Morris Fire Department put on a fire safety assembly for our elementary students. We watched video clips about preventing fires, how to stay safe in case of fire, escape routes, and calling 911. Students were then given the opportunity to tour a fire truck! Make your fire safety plan by visiting the National Fire Protection Association website.

Robotics club is underway for a great season! This year's theme is City Shaper. Students are building missions and programming in preparation for competition. Each Challenge has three parts: the Robot Game, the Innovation Project, and the Core Values. Our students will participate in the Challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (Robot Game). We will be attending an official tournament, hosted by our FIRST LEGO League Partners in November. When students are engaged in hands-on STEM experiences (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), they build confidence, grow their knowledge and develop habits of learning. The program is built around theme-based Challenges to engage children ages 9 to 14 in research, problem solving, coding, and engineering.

The MMPTSA’s partnership with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Program benefits the Mount Morris community by allowing all MMCSD residents to register their child(ren) under the age of five to receive a free book in the mail every month. The vision behind the Imagination Library Program is to foster a love of reading among preschool children and their families. The program gives each child a specially selected book each month, by mailing high-quality, age-appropriate books directly to their home. “It is imperative to read to children each day and that is why this program is so important for our Mount Morris families,” said Mrs. Dean, Mount Morris Elementary Principal. “By being a part of this program new books are delivered to families and they can begin reading to their children and teaching them to love reading!” The welcome book sent to registered children is “The Little Engine That Could” written by Watty Piper and illustrated by George and Doris Hauman. Other age-appropriate monthly books sent directly to registered children’s homes include “Daniel Finds a Poem,” “Lion Lessons,” “Max and the Tag-Along Moon,” “Sleep Train,” “Good Morning, Farm Friends,” and “Sassy: Bedtime for Baby.” The Imagination Library Program culminates with the graduation book, “Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come.” To enroll in the Imagination Library email the information requested on the enrollment form to freebooks@mtmorriscsd.org or submit a completed enrollment form to the visitor entrance secretary. Enrollment forms are available in the visitor entrance. If you have any questions regarding this program, please call Sarah Williams at (585) 658-5036.

MMPTSA Facebook post: After many months work, we ask you to go to the school's website (http://www.mtmorriscsd.org/new-tutorials) and take a look at the videos we produced this year! This effort was for YOU! If you a child new to Kindergarten or Middle School, we have advice for you. If you are wondering about all the paths to graduation for your high schooler, there are videos for you (in English & Spanish). If you want to know how or why to use SchoolTool, there is a tutorial for that. We aren't professionals, and we know the videos aren't perfect. But, we tried very hard to look at different transitions in the school and help where we could. Let us know what you think! What other videos would be helpful? Also, please consider taking this final survey to help us close our National School of Excellence program. This is our final step before we file our report with the National PTA. We hope the videos help you understand some of the different transitions within the school and we hope the survey reflects that. The survey is going home in school folders, but feel free to take it here. English: http://bit.ly/2VJSiz7 Spanish: http://bit.ly/2H6KDTm

It’s Book Fair time again! The fair will take place in our Library from Monday, May 6th until Tuesday, May 14th, during school hours. We will be open early on Friday, May 10th during Muffins with Mom. There is a new way to pay called E-Wallet; you create an account and you can put money on it via credit or debit card. That way your child does not have to carry money to buy books. The link is https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bookfairs/parent-how-it-works.html. Please note that NYS tax will be charged for each item that is purchased. The library earns money for every item sold. Last year we were able to add over 200 books to our collection and other items thanks to purchases made! If you have any questions, please contact Patty Martire at pmartire@mtmorriscsd.org.

Other age-appropriate monthly books sent directly to registered children’s homes include “Daniel Finds a Poem,” “Lion Lessons,” “Max and the Tag-Along Moon,” “Sleep Train,” “Good Morning, Farm Friends,” and “Sassy: Bedtime for Baby.” The Imagination Library Program culminates with the graduation book, “Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come.”

The 2018 MMCSD Alumni Basketball Game had 44 players in total who played in 2 separate games. Over $900 was raised for the Mount Morris Varsity Club/Boys Basketball Program. Mount Morris Alumni from as far back as 1985 participated up to the most recent 2017 graduates. The games were very competitive as the first went down to the wire and the second game was decided by 10 points. Due to the great success of this event, there will be another Alumni Basketball tournament in 2019. We would like to give a special thanks to Brian Stout, MMCSD Class of 1990 for organizing this great event!
