Mount Morris - Coach David Mead

When it comes to the sports of cross country and track & field, no one has more experience or has put in more time with our programs than Coach David Mead. Coach Mead was a long time cross country, indoor track, and track & field coach for both boys and girls teams. During his tenure, he coached both girls and boys cross country teams for 15 years. He also founded and coached the only indoor track & field teams in school history from 1988-1991. In outdoor track & field, he has experience coaching Mt. Morris teams that span over 5 decades. He began as an assistant coach in 1969. After a brief leave for the armed forces, he returned to Mt. Morris and became head track & field coach in 1974. Only a boys’ team existed until 1978 when this man founded our first girls’ team in school history. He went on to coach both boys and girls track & field teams for 31 years, including 29 of those years as head coach with his final year coming in 2012. During this time period, he coached the boys track & field team to 4 consecutive Livingston County titles from 1991-1994. His teams also won 6 Section V titles in track & field. The boys’ team won 4 Section V titles in 1991, 1999, 2000, and 2010 and the girls’ team won 2 in 1990 and 1995. During these years, he led many individual athletes to the New York State championship and in 2000 was named the Section V Class D Coach of the Year. His love of the sport also was spread to SUNY Geneseo where he also served as their sprint coach from 2001-2014. This resulted in 11 men’s and 10 women’s team championships.
