Mount Morris - Gordon W. Zangerle

Gordon W. Zangerle was one of our early pioneers from the early 1930s who was a role model for future generations of student-athletes. During his high school years, there were no sports available in the fall seasons so he was limited to the winter and spring. During those two seasons, he was a standout athlete in basketball and baseball. He was named a starter on the varsity basketball team as only a sophomore. As a forward and one of the leading scorers, he was named the team captain in his final year. He was also named to the Livingston County All-Star team in basketball in 1931. He was an exceptionally strong pitcher on the baseball field. His abilities, along with his leadership propelled our team to back to back Livingston County titles in 1931 and 1932. The 1932 team finished with a perfect 7-0 division record. He was extremely hard to hit off and most of his outings resulted in the opponents getting only three hits or less. In the 1932 season, he struck out 10 or more hitters six times including one game in which he struck out 18. One of these 10 strikeout games came in the Livingston County championship game against Nunda. After graduation, this man attended St. Lawrence University, but his love of his hometown baseball team led him to return to Mount Morris for several years to serve as both a player and team manager of the local town team. In this role, he again was a role model and leader for our younger generation.
