Mount Morris - Joseph William Bellioti

Joseph William Belliotti was a 2-sport athlete in basketball and baseball from the Class of 1929.  He would most definitely have been a 3-sport athlete but no fall sports were available to students during his high school years.  Although he was a starter and captain of our 1928-29 basketball team, it was on the baseball field where his talents shined the brightest.  He was the starting centerfielder on our baseball team for 4 consecutive years from 1926-1929.  During this time he helped lead our team to 2 Livingston County Class A championships in 1927 and 1929.  The 1927 team was actually part of the very first official Livingston County baseball league and the 1929 team finished undefeated in our division.  The 1928 team came very close to another title rattling off 12 consecutive wins but fell just short in 2nd place.  He was well known for both his defensive and offensive prowess.  Many newspaper articles from that time period described the amazing catches he would make, clutch hits he would have, as well as his speed on the basepaths and ability to steal home.   The Mt. Morris Enterprise published an article which listed him as one of the best outfielders ever to wear a Mt. Morris uniform.  After high school he served our country in the U.S. Army in World War II and then went to college where he graduated from Geneseo State Teachers College.  His career path led him back to his home as he joined the Mt. Morris Central School teaching faculty as librarian in 1951.  He also served as our guidance counselor and vice principal before being named supervising principal in 1959.  Unfortunately he passed away in a tragic car accident while on duty in 1964.  He was so well respected, the Mt. Morris Central School library was named the Joseph W. Belliotti Library in 1964.
