Mount Morris - Richard Ceronie

Dr. Richard J. Ceronie is a graduate from the Class of 1969.  He was 4-sport athlete who participated in football, basketball, baseball, and track & field.  On the football field, he led our 1968 team in scoring.  On the basketball court, he was a member of our 1969 Section V Class C championship team that finished 17-6.  In track & field, his talents really shined as he set our school record in the long jump.  This record held up for 12 years and currently ranks 4th all-time in school history.  After graduation he went on to participate in track & field at SUNY Brockport and was a 3-time conference sprint champion, while also leading the 1974 team to the SUNYAC championship.  From there he went on to become a highly successful cross country and track & field coach at both the high school and college levels.  He began coaching track & field at Canton High School where he coached 4 years and sent over 40 athletes to the NYSPHSAA championship in that short time span.  His college coaching career began at SUNY Geneseo where he established the women’s cross country and track program and led the cross country team to 3 undefeated seasons.  He also coached 24 years at Miami University in Ohio as head coach cross country and track coach. During that time, he was awarded as the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year multiple times and was selected as NCAA Regional Coach of the Year. While at Miami University Dr. Ceronie produced 3 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifiers, 4 MAC Athletes of the Year, 7 Miami University Athletes of the Year, 7 Hall of Fame athletes, over 60 conference champions, and 13 NCAA All-Americans. He was the first Mid-American Conference coach to have an athlete win an NCAA Championship.  His teams won almost 70% of all competitions during that 24-year period.  In 2009, he moved to the University of New Mexico as part of the cross country and track coaching staff where he is still coaching today.  During his time there, the cross country team won the NCAA team title twice and has finished in the top ten at the NCAA Championship in each of the last 12 years that he has been on staff.  In 2016, Dr. Ceronie was inducted into the University of New Mexico Athletic Hall of Honor.  Then in 2018 he was inducted into the Miami University Athletic Cradle of Coaches/Hall of Fame.  Now, he enters his 3rd Hall of Fame.
