MMCSD Students Participate in Youth and Government Conference in Albany

From Sunday November 23 to Tuesday November 25, Mr. Steffenilla, Social Studies Teacher and Youth and Government Advisor, accompanied a group of seventh and eighth grade students to Albany for the YMCA Youth and Government Conference. This year marked an exciting milestone. For the first time, middle school delegates were permitted to debate on both the Assembly and Senate floors inside the New York State Capitol. In previous years, they used only the Assembly chamber. Students embraced the experience with maturity, respect, and enthusiasm.

Throughout the conference, delegates learned about the legislative process by drafting mock bills, presenting them during committee sessions, and debating them publicly before voting. Every student demonstrated leadership, poise, and a commitment to civic engagement.

Every student had meaningful moments during the conference that demonstrated leadership, confidence, and growth. Forest Hull debated confidently and was never afraid to voice independent positions. Henry Tellier opened his group’s bill with confidence and thoughtful delivery. Sergio Lopez Banales carefully documented concerns raised during debate and helped strengthen his team’s closing statement. Derek Coniglio set a strong tone with a clear and confident opening. Ellie Mallaber impressed as a natural public speaker with an effective and calculated debate style. Samuel Lonsberry delivered well crafted remarks that earned praise from both peers and advisors. Brooklyn Coniglio supported her group by tracking important discussion points that guided their conclusion. Arianna Chase raised thoughtful questions and comments that shaped debate. Peyton Smith contributed strong ideas and is already planning for next year. Ashlyn Lenney closed her team’s bill with clarity and composure.

Students presented two bills. The first proposed banning homework outside of the regular school day. Supporters noted the importance of recognizing the varied home environments of students. Although it received initial interest, the bill did not pass. The second bill proposed lowering the age at which New York teenagers can obtain a learner permit in order to provide more supervised driving experience. This bill received more support than the first but not enough to secure passage.

Even though both bills were voted down, the experience was invaluable. It was the students’ first time writing and presenting legislation, and they are already thinking about future proposals that may find success on the floor.

"As their advisor and history teacher, I could not be more proud. These students demonstrated maturity, respect, and leadership throughout the conference, especially while debating on the Assembly and Senate floors. They represented our school and community in the best possible way. Their families and our district should feel incredibly proud of them," said Mr. Steffenilla.

SUNY Geneseo and MMCSD Strengthen Partnership Through Classroom Experiences

SUNY Geneseo and MMCSD have maintained a long-standing partnership that brings education students into our classrooms each year as part of their teacher preparation coursework. Multiple professors at SUNY Geneseo collaborated to create these hands-on experiences, which give future educators meaningful time in real classrooms while supporting instruction across MMCSD.

At the elementary level, fifteen SUNY Geneseo students, three per classroom, worked with grades 3 and 4 from October 9th through November 13th. These students are two semesters away from student teaching and spent full days assisting teachers, engaging with students, and teaching lessons under the guidance of their professors and MMCSD staff.

“This has been a wonderful collaboration with the college. It’s a great opportunity to help prepare teachers for the future while supporting our classrooms with future educators,” said Principal Dean.

Ms. Fisher added, “The students came in every Thursday for six weeks. On the first day, they observed and interacted with the students, and then they created their own lessons based on our current topics. They have used songs, basketballs, hands-on science experiments, and books to help students learn in fun and meaningful ways.”

One memorable elementary lesson focused on hurricanes and tornadoes. The college students used interactive demonstrations to help children understand extreme weather and how it forms.

At the high school, SUNY Geneseo education majors visit twice each fall and twice each spring. When they arrive, they meet with Principal Hamilton in the auditorium for a welcome and Q&A session, followed by a guided tour of the building. Throughout the day, they observe classes in Science, Social Studies, Math, and ELA, giving them a broad look at instructional practices at the secondary level.

“It’s always a pleasure hosting the SUNY Geneseo education students. We cherish our relationship with SUNY Geneseo and will support the future educators as they go into the world of teaching,” said Principal Hamilton.

During a recent high school visit, Mr. Gardner invited the college students to teach lessons in Philosophy and Global Studies, providing them with practical teaching experience while exposing MMCSD students to new ideas and perspectives.

The partnership with SUNY Geneseo has been a rewarding experience for everyone involved, offering future educators valuable preparation while enriching learning throughout MMCSD.

Mount Morris Junior, Savannah Ebersole, Selected to Represent Livingston County on NYS Governor’s Youth Council
Mount Morris High School junior, Savannah Ebersole, has been selected by the Livingston County Youth Bureau to represent the Livingston County on the New York State Governor’s Youth Council.

The Governor’s Youth Council includes 62 young leaders from across the state, each serving as a voice for youth in their region. Members meet regularly with state officials to discuss topics such as mental health, education, and substance use prevention, helping to shape policies that affect young people in New York.

“I’ve always been passionate about raising up voices that otherwise wouldn’t have the same opportunity to be heard,” Savannah shared. “And of course, being young myself, I believe so many young people have a lot to offer society that people in power often try to ignore. I’m excited to continue my journey of advocacy on a larger scale than I ever have before, and I’m so grateful I was given the opportunity to do so.”
Through her role on the council, Savannah plans to advocate for stronger support and understanding around substance use and addiction. Having personally experienced the challenges that families face when a loved one struggles with addiction, she hopes to use her voice to reduce stigma, encourage compassion, and promote access to effective treatment. She believes that helping families feel less isolated and better supported can make a meaningful difference in the path toward recovery.
A standout student and community leader, Savannah is active in Spanish Club, Key Club, Social Justice Club, National Honor Society, Band, Cheerleading, and Track. She has volunteered at the Livingston County Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, taken part in local community events, and contributed many hours of service to The Learning Web, a youth exploration program.

Savannah was also recognized with the 2025 Livingston County Teen Recognition Award for her leadership, community service, and positive impact on others. This past summer, she attended the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) World Leadership Conference in Chicago on a full scholarship, connecting with other young leaders from around the world.

Mount Morris Central School District is proud of Savannah’s accomplishments and the example she sets for others. Her dedication to service, advocacy, and leadership continues to inspire our school community.

Today, we proudly celebrated Veterans Day! The morning began with refreshments in the Bistro, followed by a Walk of Honor with local veterans, led by our Elementary Student Council, to recognize the brave men and women who have served our country.

The presentation featured a heartfelt Pledge by the Student Council and a powerful rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner by Jordan Willey. A tribute slideshow honored veterans, and the Elementary Band, directed by Mr. Irwin, performed My Country, 'Tis of Thee.

We were honored to hear from Chelsea Woodworth, Operations Specialist 2nd Class in the US Navy and Mount Morris Town Clerk, and to introduce our veterans to the students. Principal Dean led a Q&A, giving students a chance to express gratitude and ask thoughtful questions.

The event concluded with the Elementary Chorus, guided by Miss Foti, singing America the Beautiful, leaving everyone inspired and thankful. Thank you to all who contributed and to our veterans for their service!
