Mount Morris Odyssey of the Mind Team Shines on World Stage
The Mount Morris Central School District is proud to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our Odyssey of the Mind team, who recently returned from the 2025 World Finals at Michigan State University in East Lansing. Competing in Problem 1, Division 2, also known as “the car problem,” MMCSD’s team placed 20th out of 50 teams from around the globe, finishing ahead of teams from California, Texas, and even Hong Kong.
Team members David Kelley, Scott Lonsberry, Trinity Tidd, Lilly Locke, Madelyn O'Dell, Sam Lonsberry, and Henry Tellier dedicated seven months to designing a solution that combined creativity, engineering, and performance. Their Viking-themed presentation followed a team of Vikings racing to Valhalla, believing they were headed to Viking heaven, only to discover they had been tricked by the mischievous Norse god Loki into a trip to Valhalla, New York instead. The clever storyline and innovative vehicle design impressed judges at every level of competition, earning the team first place at Regionals, second at the State Finals, and a strong showing on the world stage.
“Odyssey of the Mind is one space where kids are challenged to be creative and problem solve on their own with minimal adult intervention,” said Coach Amanda Lonsberry. “We were able to represent Mount Morris on a world stage with a fun and unique solution, and we learned a ton along the way. These kids worked so hard. I am so proud of the hundreds of hours my team poured into what I thought was a fantastic and creative solution to this year's problem.”
In addition to the competition, students participated in the beloved World Finals tradition of pin trading, connecting with students from across the country and around the world.
Congratulations to Coach Lonsberry and the entire team for representing Mount Morris with innovation, perseverance, and pride. We can’t wait to see what they create next year! 🔗 See more highlights here: https://bit.ly/4kbE4Pn

Whether it's on the course, in the gym, or at home with his new indoor driving net in the basement, he puts in the work. I’m very proud of the growth he has shown with his golf game!”
👏⛳ Way to go, Rowan!
📣 Pop Tab Drive Reminder!
The Social Justice Club and Environmental Club are still collecting pop tabs to benefit the Ronald McDonald House! ♻️❤️

MMCSD Named One of Nation’s Best Communities for Music Education.
Mount Morris Central School District has been recognized as one of the 2025 Best Communities for Music Education by The NAMM Foundation. This prestigious designation is awarded to school districts that demonstrate outstanding commitment and achievement in providing music access and education to all students. MMCSD is one of only 935 districts nationwide to earn this honor.
“We are honored to receive this award again from the NAMM,” said Carl Irwin, Instrumental Music Teacher at MMCSD. “Recognition like this is due to the strong support that comes from teachers and community members who aren't directly involved in the music department. The Mount Morris community is consistent in its support of the fine and performing arts culture in and around our school.”
“It is a privilege to share a passion for music with all of the students at Mount Morris,” said Maria Foti, Vocal and General Music Teacher. “It would not be possible without community members who whole-heartedly support the arts and continue to show up for our students. I am truly lucky to be a part of this school family!”
To qualify for the Best Communities designation, districts must meet rigorous criteria in areas such as funding, music participation, instruction time, facilities, graduation requirements, and community music-making support.
The NAMM Foundation, a nonprofit supported by the National Association of Music Merchants and its 10,400 members worldwide, promotes participation in music-making through research, philanthropy, and public service.

MMCSD 5th Graders Experience JA BizTown!
Today, our 5th grade students participated in JA BizTown, sponsored by Junior Achievement of America, at the Kodak Center in Rochester. Leading up to the trip, students studied financial literacy in Social Studies, learning everything from how to write and cash checks to building and running a business.
At JA BizTown, students were employed by real Rochester-area businesses such as Monro Inc., GW Lisk, RG&E, and MVP Insurance. They even held a mayoral election. Each student participated in two 20-minute business meetings where they designed and marketed a product for their company.
Once their businesses were up and running, students cashed their paychecks and shopped for physical items to take home such as phone charger blocks and piggy banks. It was a fun, hands-on day full of learning and leadership!

♟️ Charlie Bump Named MMCSD Elementary Chess Club Champion! 🏆
Fifth grader, Charlie Bump, is this year’s MMCSD Elementary Chess Club Champion, rising above more than 30 players from grades four, five, and six! 🔥
Coach Provino shared, “His teacher, Mrs. Thompson, said that a goal of his for this school year was to win the annual spring tournament. He worked and played hard this year, competing in all four area tournaments at BOCES against four other local schools. Last year, Charlie was the last fourth grader standing in the tournament and finished third overall, so this year’s victory was extra special.”
Charlie medaled at every competition held from December through March. 🥇 Over the past two months, he won all of his tournament matches to claim the MMCSD Elementary Chess Champion title! 👑
👏 Congratulations, Charlie! We are so proud of your focus, dedication, and love for the game! ♟️💙
